Hau Oro - Threads of Sound - the Matariki Project

Matariki offers us the opportunity to reconnect with the universe … with the sun, the moon and the stars … and to contemplate time, memory, life, death, darkness and light. Matariki also offers us an opportunity to connect with each other in the present. Opera North is delighted to be able to share our love of music with our communities, through coming together and celebrating in uniquely translated te reo opera choruses.

Mānawa maiea a Matariki, Puanga.

Mānawa maiea te mātahi o te tau.

Let us celebrate Matariki and Puanga.

Celebrate the rising of the New Year.

(Sung to Poulenc’s Chanson Francaise - 1945)

Classics at the Cove 2024

2024 Classics at the Cove was a magic, but wet, affair! Opera North joined local singers and very special guests Maia & Joel Amosa, and Ridge Ponini supported by Juan Kim on piano. The Audience were ‘damp’ superstars and very vocal in their support! We enjoyed ourselves immensely thanks to the hospitality of Deb & Dave at Tahamoana.

Dirty Work 2024

In our first performance of 2024, we were excited to be joining the talented folks at Indian Ink Theatre Company in their unique production Dirty Work…

“This joyful comedy tips the modern office on its head and celebrates an unsung hero.

A chorus of office workers sing hits from Lorde, Beethoven and AR Rahman but in a toe- tapping twist none of them have read the script!

The computers are down and the big boss in India demands the impossible. The hapless staff are making a mess of things, which isn’t good news for the cleaner.

Workplace hierarchies are shattered, class and culture clash. From the chaos emerges a different way to value one another.

With close to 30 people on stage and featuring local choir members, Indian Ink takes things up an octave in their biggest show ever, finding joy in the eternal toil of work.”

The folk at Indian Ink were an absolute joy to work with! Opera North performed at the end of Indian Inks tour to a sold out house - here’s a snippet of “Royal” from the back of the theatre!
